Karl Körner

Embedded systems and computer networks
M.Sc. student at ETH Zurich

I write software close to the hardware and the network: firmware for microcontrollers, MAC and routing protocols, and the simulations and testbeds that show whether they hold up.

My initials as two UART frames, 8N1, least significant bit first: 0x4B 0x4B.

Skills

Ordered like a protocol stack, from firmware up to how I evaluate a system.

  1. 1

Bare-metal C and Zephyr RTOS on STM32 and nRF, UART, SPI, I²C, GNSS

  2. 2

    Link

MAC protocol design, listen-before-talk, Ethernet, LoRa

  3. 3

    Network and transport

Routing protocol design, TCP/IP, congestion control

  4. 4

    Evaluation

ns-3, OMNeT++ with FLoRa, Internet measurement, tests on real devices

Programming and tools

C, C++, Python, Java, OCaml, Linux, Git, SQL

Languages

German, native. English, fluent.

Work and projects

The numbered blocks show which of the stack layers above a project works on: 1 firmware, 2 link, 3 network and transport, 4 evaluation.

Oct 2026 – present

Stack layers: Network and transport, Evaluation

Contention detection on the Internet

Networked Systems Group, ETH Zurich

A measurement study on whether Internet flows actually compete for bandwidth. I am developing a congestion control algorithm that detects path contention and extending existing active measurement techniques.

Congestion control, active measurement

Dec 2025 – present

Stack layers: Network and transport, Evaluation

Distributed storage in LEO satellite networks

Guided research project, Chair of Connected Mobility, TU Munich

Taking a published in-orbit distributed storage system (LEO-NET ’25) from an idealized simulator to packet-level ns-3 simulations with realistic orbital dynamics.

I identified the constraints that break the original design and developed a ring-based routing algorithm, with a conflict-free protocol for relocating the routing structure as satellites move.

ns-3, C++, routing, orbital dynamics

Dec 2025 – Jun 2026

Stack layers: Firmware, Link, Network and transport

Low-level embedded software

Working student, Infineon Technologies, Munich

Developed and debugged bare-metal Ethernet and TCP/IP communication software for networked, microcontroller-based control units.

Bare-metal C, Ethernet, TCP/IP

Feb 2025 – Jun 2025

Stack layers: Firmware, Link, Evaluation

Event-driven wireless sensor network

Bachelor thesis with Prof. Luca Benini, Center for Project-Based Learning, ETH Zurich

Zephyr firmware for nRF sensor nodes with GNSS-based real-time event detection, and a hybrid MAC protocol with listen-before-talk, exponential backoff and selective acknowledgements, validated in OMNeT++ with FLoRa and on real hardware.

Zephyr RTOS, nRF, GNSS, MAC design

Sep 2023 – Mar 2024

Stack layers: Firmware

Embedded software for an underwater vehicle

Project Nautilus, ARIS Academic Space Initiative Switzerland

Implemented UART-based communication protocols for internal data exchange on STM32.

STM32, UART
